In Elk Grove, California, five children have been arrested for participating in the "door kick challenge," a TikTok trend that has alarmed homeowners nationwide. The latest arrests included two 13-year-olds who were caught on video kicking in a front door, causing over $680 in damages. According to the Elk Grove Police Department, officers have responded to at least eight similar incidents in the past month.
Officials did not release the age of the other three who were arrested, but told residents they were juveniles.
This trend involves teenagers sneaking up to homes and forcefully kicking doors, leading to property damage and potential safety risks. Elk Grove police have issued warnings about the serious consequences of what may seem like a harmless prank. Sergeant Jason Jimenez emphasized the danger, stating, "It sounds like someone is kicking down your door to try and hurt your family."
The children involved could face felony charges if damages exceed $400, as per California law. Residents like Ronnie Monroe have expressed concerns over potential violent reactions from homeowners who might mistake the prank for a break-in attempt. Monroe's garage door was targeted twice, leaving his family frightened.
"Somebody could come out with a gun, and you could never know, these kids could be dead just for a stupid prank," Monroe told KOVR.
The Elk Grove Police Department is urging parents to discuss the importance of safety and respect for property with their children to prevent further incidents.
