Bulldog multis atop the leaderboard in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. - Fresno State's group of multis showed up in a big way on Thursday as the combined events began at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Through Day 1 of competition, the Bulldogs trio in the heptathlon sit 1-2-3 led by Colleen Uzoekwe while Garrett Ostrinski sits in second in the decathlon.

Finishing first in three of four events, Uzoekwe ended Thursday with 3,489 points, the most points ever by a Bulldog heptathlete through four events. It surpassed Jestena Mattson's total of 3,349 which was set in 2019.

Uzoekwe opened the competition in third following a 14.23 in 100-meter hurdles. The senior then took the lead and never looked back, recording the top marks in the high jump (1.67m/5-5.75), shot put (14.52m/47-7.75) and 200 meters (24.90). She holds a 401-point lead over Ella Spaulding who has 3,088 points. The Bulldog sophomore finished second in the high jump (1.61m/5-3.25) and the 200 (24.96). Madison Hutton is 29 points behind Spaulding in third with 3,059. The senior placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.20) and shot put (11.14m/36-6.75).

In the decathlon, Ostrinski had to work his way back up the leaderboard after finishing ninth in the 100 meters. The senior rallied by finishing fourth in the long jump (6.77m/22-2.5), second in the shot put (12.49m/40-11.75) and high jump (1.90m/6-2.75), and third in the 400 meters (49.94). Through five events, the Bulldog has 3,686 points and is just 81 back of first.
