BERKELEY, Calif. – Fresno State finished where it started the day in the women's heptathlon, going 1-2-3 at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Colleen Uzoekwe maintained the top spot over Ella Spaulding and Madison Hutton. In the decathlon, Garrett Ostrinski pulled out his first combined events win after the 1500 meters.
Uzoekwe finished with 5,192 points, the seventh-highest point total in program history. The senior placed fourth in the long jump (5.39m/17-8.25) and third in the javelin (32.94m/108-1).
Spaulding closed the gap on Uzoekwe, ending the competition with a personal best 5,135 points. The sophomore closed the day taking first in the javelin (34.47m/113-1) and the 800 meters (2:20.70). Madison Hutton placed third with 5,011 points.
Ostrinski entered Friday 81 points behind Cal's Riley Knott. The Bulldog kept the Bear within arms' length through the first four events of Day 2. Heading into the 1500 meters, the final event of the competition, Ostrinski trailed by 131 points. The Bulldog senior erased the deficit, running a time of 4:43.93, more than 30 seconds faster than Knott, to grab the win with a career-best 6,996 points, 65 ahead of Knott.
STANFORD, Calif. – Fresno State started the weekend off at the Stanford Invitational with six Top 5 finishes, including a win in the shot put invite section from Cierra Jackson.
Jackson won the shot put by landing her top mark of the season at 16.04m/52-7.5. The Bulldogs also took second in the invite sections of the hammer and javelin. Emma Harper finished the hammer with her best mark registering 55.36m/181-7. Harriette Mortlock set a new personal best in the javelin, landing a toss of 52.95m/173-8. The junior moved up to No. 2 in program history.
Jewel Ash also moved from third to second at Fresno State in the 400-meter hurdles. The senior placed second in the event clocking a personal best time of 58.08. Ash also qualified for tomorrow's final in the 100-meter hurdles after winning her heat at 13.79.
In the men's collegiate section of the hammer, Isaiah Calvin and Jose Zarco-Sanchez placed third and fourth, respectively. The Bulldogs finished with top throws of 52.11m/170-11 and 51.70m/169-7.
SAN FRANCISCO – Fresno State began events on Friday at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, with the highlight of the day coming in the women's steeplechase.
Finishing 20 seconds apart in their heat, Kylie Ward and Gianna Chiaramonte placed 15th and 21st overall. Ward was just off her personal-best pace, finishing in 11:15.05. Chiaramonte crossed the line in 11:35.12.
