Key West bar rigs phone for 500 locals to call fam

Despite having no cold beer thanks to massive power outages in the wake of Hurricane Irma, a dive bar in Key West is still the most popular place in town because of something even more valuable: a working landline. A staffer at The Green Parrot--a mechanic apparently named "Buco"--jerry-rigged a working phone after realizing that the restaurant next door had a handset and a connection that could be wired up to the bar using cables. BuzzFeed reports that thanks to Buco's handiwork, more than 500 islanders have been able to call loved ones and let them know they're okay. "He pirated the thing. He did it for the people," says a 66-year-old local named Rick. "Perfect example of Key West coming together."
